- Description
- This thesis is an exploration of EFL teaching in Chilean secondary public high-schools in the city of Concepcion, Chile with a particular focus on the methodological innovations proposed by the Ministry of Education from 1998 and implemented to the National English Curriculum over the following years. This study explored teachers’ attitudes to the changes several years after the methodological innovations were introduced in EFL education in Chile, their preparedness to enact change, and the degree to which the curricular changes are being implemented in line with the intended curriculum. These curricular innovations were motivated by government recognition of the important role English plays in the twenty-first century. This study was conducted using a mixed method of investigation where qualitative and quantitative tools are combined. It included the participation of fourteen EFL teachers in service in public high schools and used a survey and an interview for data collection. The findings from this study indicate that the entire process of implementation of the new curriculum has resulted in a number of challenges for participant teachers. In fact, the implementation process has presented several difficulties in all stages according to participant evaluation, beginning with an inadequate design and poor support provided to the teachers by the Ministry of Education and schools, in particular regarding the lack of training in and supervision of the new methods. The results from this research regarding Concepcion city schools are in line with other studies conducted mainly in Santiago de Chile several years ago, where teachers also reported similar problems with the new curriculum implementation. According to the EFL teacher participants in this study, the reform has only been successful in increasing the number of students accessing this education, but the quality of this EFL instruction requires important improvements otherwise the entire reform is at risk of failure.
